Remove A Few Tree Stumps From Your Yard
If you recently moved into a new home and are not satisfied with the yard that surrounds it because there are a few tree stumps scattered through it, learn how to remove them by completing the following instructions. When finished, plant grass seed in the bare sections to give your property a uniform and well-cared for appearance.
Materials
- work gloves
- power drill
- drill bits
- small funnel
- stump remover granules
- plastic sheeting
- bricks
- large rocks
- shovel
- power saw
- hatchet
- soil
- rake
- grass seed (same variety that is growing in the rest of your yard)
- garden hose
Drill Holes And Fill Them With Stump Remover
Put on a pair of work gloves to protect your hands from chemicals that are in the stump remover granules. Drill several holes that are a few inches deep into the top of each tree stump. Insert the end of a small funnel in one the holes and fill it with stump remover granules. Fill the remaining holes in the same manner.
Cover each stump with a piece of plastic sheeting. Secure the plastic pieces by laying a few bricks or large rocks across the edges of each one. The stump remover granules will cause the wood to decay. This may take several weeks. Keep the stumps covered at all times while you are waiting for this to occur so that the granules remain intact.
Cut Up The Wood And Add Soil To Uneven Areas
After a few weeks have passed, uncover the stumps and test their firmness by pressing the end of a large shovel against them. If the wood is spongy, it has decayed enough for you to remove the stumps. Cut up the wood into small pieces with a power saw or hatchet. If any indentations are in your lawn after the stumps have been removed, use a large shovel to fill them in with soil. Rake the ground to assist with leveling it.
Plant grass seeds in each cleared area that are the same variety as the rest of your lawn and water them well. Monitor your property on a regular basis and add more water to the areas where the seeds have been planted whenever the soil's surface is dry. Within a few weeks, new blades of grass will be growing in the areas where the stumps once were. Soon, your lawn will have an attractive appearance that you will be proud of.
